Executive Coaching

The Coaching Process

Michael works with a leader and his or her manager or board to clarify the aims of the coaching. Michael collects data through in-depth confidential and anonymous 360-degree interviews. These conversations help engage the organization in change and development. They provide a valuable opportunity for reflection that helps everyone get better.

Next, Michael uses qualitative data analysis methods to get a clear picture of the leaders strengths on and behaviors worth improving.

Then, the work of changing 1 to 3 targeted behaviors begins. Focusing makes improvement tractable. New behavior raises a leader’s whole game. The work is done in strategic alignment with the manager or board.

Michael supports the leader in developing a plan, working towards desired behavior change, providing expert feedback, and being an accountability partner in the process.

Getting better at leadership is a lifelong journey. Having good technique and behaviors helps a leader grow ever more skillful through practice and experience.

Michael has been coached by some great coaches as a psychologist, scholar, conservatory-trained percussionist, and jazz drummer. He was also a competitive swimmer. This process is not so different. Instead of music or sports, the performances are in leadership, backed by social science and best practices in leadership and negotiation.
